Soda Surface and Fire - Soda Firing Workshop at Kirkland Arts Center

Event Description: Soda Surface and Fire is a workshop, led by Betsy Smith & Wayne Pennington, on preparing work for and firing a high fire soda kiln using KAC’s soda kiln built in 2015 by the center and its students. The July 14th session will cover types of clay, object shapes and surface treatments appropriate for soda firing. The Aug 3 & 4 session is final prep, loading and firing the kiln. We unload Tuesday, Aug 6 at 4:30pm.

Arbutus Folk School: Olympia: DECORATING THE CERAMIC SURFACE: STENCILS, SGRAFFITO & SCREEN PRINTING

Event Description: In this two session class, students will learn how to make their own stencils and screens and use underglaze to create colorful layered designs on clay. In the first session, we will discuss basic surface design concepts and learn how to cut custom paper stencils and use sgraffito (carving through slip/underglaze) to add dimension to our designs. In the second session, we will learn how to expose screens using personalized images and use underglaze to screen print on bisqueware.

All artwork must fit within a 5”x5”x5” cube. Artwork may be functional or sculptural, it may set or hang for display, pieces must be primarily clay work. It just needs to fit in a 5x5x5 inch box! This is not juried, this is an All-Member Invitational Exhibition, so join in on the fun and show us what you’ve got! Artist is responsible for getting their artwork to and from Burnished Clay Studio. Artwork must arrive by January 5, 2019.

Art Show: Sacred Shards, a Decade of Reflection by Robin Leventhal- Walla Walla

vent Description: This one woman show by Robin Leventhal showcases recent work with black clay celebrating the heart with a re-purposed spring as a stand in a series called Light Hearted . There is also a section dedicated to air planters which animate the parched earth and burnished forms. The two largest of these are on the wall becoming Wall Flowers Finally, there are a group of my mixed media pieces which include lacquered and lustred pods and flowers housed with ceramic components, bones and rust fragments enshrined on wood. These pieces were inspired from the passing of my father and were initially for ashes, but evolved into shrines to celebrate the beauty that is life.
