Event Description: In this two session class, students will learn how to make their own stencils and screens and use underglaze to create colorful layered designs on clay. In the first session, we will discuss basic surface design concepts and learn how to cut custom paper stencils and use sgraffito (carving through slip/underglaze) to add dimension to our designs. In the second session, we will learn how to expose screens using personalized images and use underglaze to screen print on bisqueware.

Materials provided by student: Paper, pencils, sgrafitto tools, Xacto knife, brushes, scissors, small containers for underglaze, a high contrast black and white image and any greenware or bisqueware they would like to decorate. Tiles will be provided for students to decorate and there will be an assortment of tools to share.

Students are welcome to bring in their own pieces (leather hard and bisque) to decorate in addition to the tiles provided by the instructor.

The finished tiles will be kiln fired after the last day of class – students will be notified about a pick-up date when they are ready.
