DESCRIPTION:

Have you ever wondered how Ceramicist Mary Jane Elgin carves those beautiful shapes into her ceramic vessels? How does she get all those holes and cutouts into her pieces without them collapsing? Well, you are in luck - we are offering a one day ceramic carving workshop with Mary Jane herself! Learn all of her secrets and have fun adding a new dimensionality to a simple ceramic vessel!

This workshop will begin in the morning when you will pick a leather-hard ceramic from the forms which Mary Jane will have prepared for you. We will then spend some time with paper and pencil, planning the designs which you would like to cut into your piece. Mary Jane will assist you in translating the design onto your piece so that you can successfully cut away the negative spaces and bring your design to life! The process of refining and detailing the design is the most time-consuming part of the process, and the part which Mary Jane finds completely engaging. All necessary tools will be available for your use during the workshop.

When you are done carving, the artist-instructor’s work has just begun! She will then carefully pack up your pieces, and take them to her kiln on Orcas island, where she will bisque, glaze and fire them, and then return your beautiful art ceramics to Cole Art Studio for you to pick up, all in time for the Holidays. We’ll let you know when your piece is ready to be picked up.

Note: Please bring the $60 supply fee in cash or check directly to the artist at the workshop. This will help to cover the artist’s expenses for her time and supplies in making the original ceramic forms, firing them, then glazing the pieces and firing them for the final time.

Supply List:

Mary Jane will supply all the necessary forms and tools for this workshop for the $60 supply fee. Mary Jane will have some tools available for purchase, if you would like to take some home.
