Event Description: Terry will be conducting a workshop at Connie Ward's studio just north of Poulsbo - materials supplied. Classes (limited to 8 students) will be outside -weather permitting. Terry will demonstrate how develops designs from nature on one of her own pieces. We will develop our designs to apply to 3 4x4 tiles and 1 3" tall cup - all of which will be fired Saturday night. Sunday, we'll open the kiln,discuss our work, and enjoy a presentation of Terry's portfolio. Cost is $95.

Event Description: In this session, Clovy Tsuchiya demonstrates how she uses hand building techniques to make sleek, curvaceous serving spoons with carved decoration. It’s a chance to focus on the details of a clay spoon- thinking about fitting the scoop to what you’re serving, it’s position at rest and in use, and the flow from bowl to handle. Each student can complete up to three spoons during the class session as greenware (glazing will be independent).

Arbutus Folk School: Material Foundations and Intro to Glaze Formulation - Olympia

Class Description: This class will introduce students to the most common materials used to create glazes. Through a series of labs we will create a foundation of knowledge about ceramic materials, the constituent components of a glaze and learn to mix glazes. Students will be introduced to methods they can use to alter glazes to correct flaws, change color, or adjust texture. All labs will be fired to Cone 6 in an oxidation atmosphere. Skills learned in this course can be applied to any firing temperature or atmosphere. This class is recommended for Intermediate students with prior experience working with clay and using glaze in a typical classroom setting.

Event Description: Mary Mallahan is a Ceramic Artist living and teaching on Northern California's redwood coast. Her workshop focuses on the continuing development of functional lidded containers and expressive servers for potlucks and food gatherings. Providing a personalized alternative to plastic, inspired by Pyrex and vintage glass refrigerator dishes. This inquiry largely remains centered on studies in form and texture within the context of functionality. Artists will learn how to create both wheel thrown and hand built food savers.Day one will include Demos on wheel thrown food saver and followed by slab built adaptation of same process. Also stamp making and use of other useful tools for embellishment.
